We start from Gaiole in Chianti, crossing beautiful hills, soft valleys, and oak woods, to reach one of the most iconic symbols of Chianti and L’Eroica: the Brolio Castle. The ascent to the castle is gentle, lined with centuries-old cypress trees providing constant shade in all seasons. The climb to Brolio Castle is one of the first mesmerizing moments of L’Eroica's routes, welcoming cyclists in the early dawn, with flickering torches and the dew of the morning light. If you happen to hear hoofbeats and barking dogs, fear not: they say it’s the ghost of Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who rides around the fortress, hunting with his dogs under the starry sky. Leaving Brolio Castle behind, you'll hit the first stretch of gravel road (about 2 km), plunging into an exhilarating descent through charming vineyards. After 17 km from Gaiole, you’ll encounter the famous "leccione," a majestic oak tree made famous by Bernardo Bertolucci’s film Stealing Beauty.
