Castelnuovo Berardenga lies at the heart of a region long contested by Florence and Siena, the scene of brutal battles, the most famous being the Battle of Monteaperti, immortalized by Dante with the words: "the havoc that dyed the Arbia red." Just a couple of kilometers off the route, a Romanesque pyramid surrounded by ancient cypress trees marks the event at the Monteaperti memorial. The road to Pianella offers a variety of changing landscapes, gently climbing toward Vagliagli.
