The picturesque village of Castellina in Chianti greets cyclists with its imposing Rocca. With just over 2,000 inhabitants, it stands at the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Its history dates back to the Etruscan era, and over the centuries, the village has been frequently mentioned as one of the strongholds of the Chianti League, a political-military alliance created by the Republic of Florence in 1384 to defend and manage the Chianti region on behalf of the Republic. During the hot summer months, visitors can seek relief in the Via delle Volte: an impressive underground tunnel, designed by Brunelleschi, which now houses shops, artisan workshops, and restaurants.
